Swing Week Slide Show

2012 brings exciting changes to Swing Week. Classes are now open to multiple instruments and skill levels. Most classes have 2 or more instructors for more one-on-one time with students. For example, a ukulele player may take a class with Buddy Spicher, Dave Davies & Tom Mitchell (Swing Ensemble);  a trombone player might work with Solomon Douglass, Ralph Gordon and Andrew Guterman as their back-up band, or a rhythm guitarist may sit in with them (Sit In With A Rhythm Section). Dancers can swing to live music under the guidance of Mike “The Girl” Legett & Dan Rosenthal as the rhythm section of Solomon Douglas, Kathy Reitz and Andrew Guterman assists musicians in the class (Playing For Dancers, Dancing For Players). There’s also a new Harmony Singing class. Students can also rehearse with one of the student bands and perform in the student showcase at the end of the week. Evening activities include swing dances, a student talent show, singing circles, optional mini-courses, world class Swing and Bluegrass concerts, and legendary late-night jam sessions.

Do you have questions about Swing Week? Feel free to call 304.637.1209, email augusta@AugustaHeritageCenter.org, or email Swing Week Coordinator Wendi Bourne at swing@AugustaHeritageCenter.org.

Students need not be proficient in swing to benefit from Swing Week classes but should have a basic working knowledge of their instrument. Young folks able to maintain an adult level of participation are welcome.

To register, simply specify “Swing Week” as your class, and tell us what your main instrument will be. Specific classes are chosen by each student at Swing Week orientation on Sunday night.

A Note from Dance Instructors Mike “The Girl” Legett and Dan Rosenthal
If you’re a musician who’s thought about trying dance before, or wanted to get back into it, this is the year.  We’ll have dance-related mixers, lessons before the dances, and even make special guest appearances in other classes.  This is music that says, “Get up and dance!”… and we simply have to obey.  We hope you’ll join us on the dance floor!
